State of the Strikeforce Middleweights

by Michael David SmithIn the last three years, the Strikeforce middleweight title has been vacated more times than it's been defended, and 2010 has been another long year for the promotion's 185-pound division. Its champion, Jake Shields, whipped its big free agent acquisition, Dan Henderson -- and then promptly bolted for the UFC. And then a much-discussed middleweight tournament failed to materialize.

But there's some hope that Strikeforce will have big fights in the year ahead, even if the middleweight division fizzled in 2010. Below we look at what some of those big fights might be and where the middleweight belt is headed as we survey the state of the Strikeforce middleweight division.

Eye Poke Steals the Show at Strikeforce Challengers

by Michael David SmithJustin Wilcox, Ovince St. Preux and Liz Carmouche all had the biggest wins of their MMA careers at Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers event on Showtime. So it's a shame that an accidental eye poke ending a fight in just six seconds is what everyone will be talking about.

But that's exactly what happened on Friday night: The fight between Dream welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis and Waachiim Spiritwolf was over as soon as it started when Zaromskis charged across the cage at the opening bell, went for a flying knee and accidentally poked Spiritwolf in the eye, causing an injury that led the ringside doctor to call off the fight. The official ending was a no contest, six seconds into the first round, in one of the fastest, strangest endings to a fight in MMA history.

Check out Dan Henderson as he gets ready for 'Babalu'

Dan Henderson's Strikeforce debut didn't exactly go as planned. After signing with the promotion with much fanfare, Henderson was dominated by Jake Shields for four rounds of their five-round bout. In this video, Henderson talks about how a medication affected his weight cut and preparation for the fight with Shields, and how he's changed things up since then.

Even at 40 years old, Hendo says that he has plenty left to fight for. He will show that this Saturday in St. Louis in a rematch with Renato "Babalu" Sobral.

Bob Uecker Shows Humor Still Intact on Upcoming MLB Network Special

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Two surgeries on his heart in the past eight months did not remove Bob Uecker's sense of humor.

Uecker, the self-deprecating Brewers radio broadcaster also known for his work in ads, late-night talk shows, movies and a sitcom, is the featured guest Friday on MLB Network's "Studio 42 with Bob Costas."

Costas taped the interview with Uekcer, his former broadcast partner with the Baseball Network and NBC, in late September. In it, Uecker -- the self-proclaimed "Mr. Baseball" -- discussed his appearances on the "Tonight" show with Johnny Carson, in Miller Lite ads, in "Major League" and on "Mr. Belvedere."

But, especially with Costas as willing straight man, every subject allows Uecker, 75, to mock himself. In six seasons with the Braves, Phillies and Cardinals, Uecker batted .200 and started just 217 games.

Lullo replaces Elkins to complete UFC 123 line-up

Mike Lullo out of suburban Chicago is the latest addition to UFC 123. He is replacing the injured Darren Elkins to face Edson Barboza, and is on an eight-fight win streak. Lullo trains at Midwest Training Center where he has worked with Clay Guida, and is pictured above winning by gogoplata over Jeremy Castro in June.

There is one more thing you should know about Lullo:

He is my cousin, and full disclosure, I am incredibly proud of Mikey for getting one step closer to his dream. Cagewriter will be on hand to cover Lullo, "Rampage" Jackson, Lyoto Machida and all of the other fighters at UFC 123 next week.

Boise State Drops to No. 9 in AP Poll

NEW YORK (AP) -- Boise State dropped six spots to No. 9 in The Associated Press college football poll after having its 24-game winning streak snapped.

For the third straight week, No. 1 Oregon and Auburn hold the top two spots in the rankings. No. 3 TCU moved up one spot.

The gap between the Ducks and Tigers shrank to 19 points. The Ducks have 36 first-place votes and 1,475 points, while Auburn has 23 and 1,456 from the media panel.

Wisconsin is fourth and Stanford is fifth.

Say it ain't so, Tom.

The world's most accomplished quarterback is not really in the market for hair plugs, is he? Why not just go ahead and start carrying a blow dryer into the huddle?

It's not that hair plugs are necessarily effeminate, or that there's anything wrong with being effeminate.

Ah, enough with the political correctness. Of course there's something wrong if you're an NFL quarterback.

Women fixate on their hair and makeup. QBs are supposed to fixate on the Jets and Ravens.

The position epitomizes leadership, stoicism and all around dude-ness. Now comes word that the NFL's top dude has visited Dr. Robert Leonard of the Leonard Hair Transplant Association in Cranston, R.I.

Leonard is apparently the Dr. James Andrews of hair restoration. His waiting room is full of magazines like Cosmopolitan, O, and Cat Fancy. I just wish somebody would have sneaked in "Johnny U: The Life and Times of Johnny Unitas."

Brady could have thumbed through and noticed that the greatest QB ever spent about 1.2 seconds a month fussing over his hair. It might have prompted him to turn to the woman sitting next to him and ask:

"Gisele, am I henpecked?"

The answer to that is becoming sadly clear.
